PUNAHILKKA
Client: Vaasa Premises management
Place: Vaasa
Project Type: New Building
Area: 3000 m²
Finished: 2011
The Punahilkka day-care centre is located on Korkeamäki in Vaasa and is a bilingual kindergarten which offers day-care in shift. Except the Punahilkka department the building is also housing day-care department Lumikki and the floor plan layouts are designed so that co-operation between the departments is possible and some functions are shared, like gymnastic hall, teaching kitchen, room for handcrafts, waterplay and sauna.
In the middle of the dens and green single housing area vi planned a big building but still adapted to the surroundings with a shifting façade and carefully planned sloping roof. The building gets daylight into the deeper parts through a ribbon of ceilings which has given part of the shape of the building. The acoustics of the high spaces were improved with cladding the walls with textile carpet. The outdoor areas are divided by age of the children when the playing areas were planned the natural terrain was used to give possibilities to go on excursion their own yard.
The layout of the floor plans is built on small departments where the size and activity depend on the age of the children. Part of the children spend time in the day-care also during nigh, weekends and holidays. The versatile operation of the building was taken into account already from the beginning and the goal was to create cosy, functional and flexible spaces. In every sense a comfortable and inspiring environment for both staff and young users.
