Tervahovi is the main building of the University of Vaasa at the campus at Brändö and it was built in 1994. We got a renovation and interior project in two parts, of which the first part focused on the offices and the break room of the staff. The other part of the project was to develop and plan new educational environments which included lecture halls and flexible lounges. Our goal was to design fresh and airy spaces inspired by the seaside location of the campus.
It was demanding to meet the demands of light, ventilation and acoustics and at the same time create an elegant solution, to ensure a good result extensive detail planning was made for each space. For the ceiling we chose an elastic material and used flexible profiles to create waves. Through careful planning of light and ventilation in co-operation with HVAC and electrical planners these could be fit into the construction. Bended surfaces together with hidden acoustic panels creates an excellent acoustic environment in all spaces.
To our delight we have heard that the students enjoy the vibrant spaces and the lecture-halls are popular among the teachers and almost always booked
